Oren Atherton was born in Livermore, Kentucky on April 13, 1930. He attended Utica High School. Soon after, Oren married his high school sweetheart Helen. He joined the U.S Navy right out of high school where he served as a sailor on a U.S Naval Ship during the Korean War. After his service, he came home and worked as a crane operator, but the traveling was too much on his family, so he enrolled in Tri-State Barber College in Louisville Kentucky. Oren bought his own barber shop in Owensboro, Kentucky which he ran for 27 years. Oren is a member of Pleasant Hope Baptist church where he sang in the choir. Oren was a volunteer firefighter for Utica Fire Department, and was also a member of the Fraternal order of Masons. His proudest accomplishments are his wife Helen, and his children Rebecca Elaine Wilson and the late Ronald Lee Atherton.
