He was a founding member of the Chattanooga/Hamilton County chapter of the Merchant Marine’s Veterans

Served as the group’s president and chaplain for many years

He was Veteran of the Year in Chattanooga in 2005

 

Bio

William Thomas Bible, or Tom as he is known to most of us, was born in Morristown, TN in 1921. His family later moved to Harlan County, KY where he graduated high school in 1939.

After graduation, he opened Bible’s Grocery Store with his father. When World War II began, he decided to serve his country by joining the Merchant Marines where he graduated from their Academy. He made two tours as Chief Engineer of the ship he served on.

He was in the Battle of Normandy in 1944. After the war, he moved to Chattanooga, TN where he met and married Katherine Phillips Bible. They had 2 children, Tom, Jr. and Caroline.

He and his father opened and operated Bible’s Hardware until 1964, when the business burned. He went on to work for Jefferson Standard Insurance Co. and then E. Cecil Phillips Agency, as a real estate broker, until he retired in 1986.

Tom has been an example to others through his service to his country and his care of his family. He was a founding member of the Chattanooga/Hamilton County chapter of the Merchant Marine’s Veterans and served as the group’s president and chaplain for many years.

He was Veteran of the Year in Chattanooga in 2005. Tom is a humble, Christian man who has a great number of accomplishments. He was a successful businessman. He is a man who is dedicated to his country and his family. Those who know Tom have only the highest praise to offer when speaking of him.
